Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team dropped both ends of an ACC doubleheader on Saturday at English Field at Union Park to visiting 21st-ranked Louisville Cardinals, falling 3-1 in the first game and 16-1 in the second.
Strong pitching in that first game also saw some great help from the defense as the Hokies turned three double plays - and a total of five on the day. Luke Scherzer allowed an unearned run in the third, while Nic Enright and Joey Sullivan combined for six innings of work and each allowed one run.
However, Louisville's starter Nick Bennett limited the Hokies to just five baserunners (four hits and a walk) and a single run in the fifth inning. JD Mundy scored Nick Owens with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 contest at that point, but Tech would get no closer.
No. 21 Louisville (24-11, 9-9 ACC) jumped all over Tech in the nightcap, scoring 13 runs over the first three frames, as the Cardinals turned three Hokie errors into six unearned runs.
Tech (15-20, 6-12) got its only run of the game in the first, when Tom Stoffel notched his team-high tying fifth home run of the season over the wall in right. It was the 15th home run of his Tech career and the 191st hit of his career as well.
