Hokie Track concludes Penn State National

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The second and final day of the Penn State National is in the books, and Virginia Tech came away with numerous season-best performances and four top-three finishers in field events.

In the women’s unseeded 200-meter dash, four Hokies finished in under 25 seconds, starting with Funmi Alabi in 12th with a season-best 24.67, followed by Ogechi Nwaneri (14th, 24.74), Zakiya Tyson (16th, 24.86) and Aunye Boone (17th, 24.88). Ebenezer Amegashie earned a new personal-best in the men’s 200-meters at 22.34, placing 20th.

Redshirt-senior Asia Washington took fifth in the women’s 400 meters at 55.23, the fastest time of any Hokie yet so far this season. The men’s 1,600-meter relay of Amegashie, Jeff Artis-Gray, Darrell Wesh and Keith Ricks won thier heat, placing 10th overall at 3:17.66. The women’s 4x4 squad closed the meet for Tech on the track with Washington, Amegashie, Alabi and Natalie Woodford crossing the line fifth at 3:46.76.

In Saturday’s field events, Hasheem Halim won the men’s triple jump with a new season-best distance of 50-11 (15.52m). Tech football standout David Wilson made his season debut in the triple jump and took third at 50-6.75 (15.41m). Ronnie Black took third in the men’s high jump, tying his collegiate-best of 6-10.75 (2.10m). Kelly Phillips was the Hokies’ highest finisher in the women’s pole vault, clearing 12-7.5 (3.85) to take third place. Phillips was one of three to beat the 12-foot mark, with Caitlin Thornley just shy at 11-9.75 (3.60m) to tie for fourth.

The Hokies return home next weekend for the VT Elite Meet. Two days of events at Rector Field House begin on Friday, Feb. 4.
