Sosnoskie named ACC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech catcher Anthony Sosnoskie was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday following the opening weekend of the 2009 baseball season.

The Front Royal, Va., native was one of many Hokies who put forth an impressive offensive performance over the weekend, as Tech won its four games by a combined score of 57-19.

Sosnoskie was named the MVP of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Spartanburg, S.C., after posting a .643 batting average, a 1.429 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage. Sosnoskie belted three home runs during Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Wofford after hitting six all of last season. His efforts also helped Virginia Tech post a 21-4 win over UNC Asheville on Friday and an 11-3 victory over USC Upstate on Sunday.

In addition to the three home runs, the junior tallied nine hits, seven runs scored, seven RBIs, six bases on balls and two doubles throughout the four games.

Sosnoskie is the first Hokie to earn an ACC baseball weekly honor since Bryan Thomas did so on Feb. 20, 2006, and just the third overall since Tech joined the conference. Ryan Kennedy earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors twice in 2005.

The Hokies will begin the home portion of their schedule Tuesday at 3 p.m. against East Tennessee State at English Field. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
