Hokies tied for second after first day at VCU

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a two-round total of 559 and are tied with Virginia for second place after the first day at the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. on Monday. The event is being played on the par 71, 6,955-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.

The Hokies are led by senior Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.), who shot rounds of 68 and 69 for a total of five-under-par 137. He is tied for seventh place, five strokes behind co-leaders Dustin Garza of Wichita State and Brendan Geilow of Wake Forest.

Sophomore Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) shot 71-70=141 and is tied for 18th place. Sophomores Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) and Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) each shot 142 and are tied for 25th place. Redshirt junior Matt Boyd (Sugar Land. Tex.) shot 146 and is tied for 47th.

Redshirt senior Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) is playing the tournament as an individual and shot 139 and is tied for 10th. His second round 65 was the low round of the day among Hokie golfers and it was tied for the second-lowest round of the tournament. Freshman Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) also is playing as an individual and shot 147 and is tied for 53rd in his first collegiate rounds.

Wake Forest shot a two-round total of 542 and is 17 strokes ahead of the Hokies and Cavaliers. Host VCU is fourth at 560, Iowa is fifth at 563 and Wichita State is sixth at 564. Augusta State is seventh at 566, Maryland is eighth at 570 and Southeastern Louisiana and Penn State are tied for ninth at 574. UNC Wilmington is 11th at 576, East Carolina is 12th at 578, Richmond is 13th at 579, South Florida is 14th at 580 and Old Dominion is 15th at 588.
