BLACKSBURG, Va. - Andrea Barbour, a freshman guard from Charlottesville, Va., has been named to the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman women's basketball team. The squad is selected by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) consisting of media members who cover the ACC on a regular basis. Since entering the ACC, Barbour becomes the first Tech women's basketball player chosen for All-Freshman team.
Barbour was named ACC Rookie of the Week, for the week ending Dec. 30, 2007. She became the first Tech women's basketball player to win the weekly award since the Hokies joined the ACC. Barbour was named the Hokie Hardwood Classic MVP after tying the tournament single-game record with 11 field goals against the Pirates. She is averaging 15.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in 20 of the 25 games she has played in this season. Barbour has broken the 20-point barrier six times and currently ranks 13th in the ACC in scoring and is eighth in the nation in freshman scoring.
"We are extremely proud of Andrea for receiving this honor," said Virginia Tech head coach Beth Dunkenberger. "She is an explosive offensive player who has stepped in and made big contributions to our program. She has a bright future and we look forward to watching her continued development."
The Hokies will open play in the 31st ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C. on Thurs., Mar. 6 at 6 p.m. against Boston College. Tech (15-14, 2-12) lost to Eagles, 63-53, on Jan. 3 in Blacksburg in the ACC opener for both teams. This year's matchup will be a repeat of last year's opening round game won by Hokies, 60-54, in overtime. Boston College (19-10, 7-7) defeated Miami, 63-52, in Coral Gables, Fla. in their regular season finale. A victory would advance Tech to the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 2 seed Maryland.
