BLACKSBURG, Va. - After a week off from competition, the Virginia Tech cross country teams will compete on Saturday at the University of Arkansas' Chile Pepper Invitational. The men's team will run in a 10k race at 9:45 a.m., followed by the 19th-ranked women's team running 6k at 10:30 a.m.
The Hokie women improved from 20th place to 19th in the latest USTFCCA national poll with a second-place standing in the Southeast region. The men's team maintained its fifth position in the Southeast Region for the second consecutive week.
The Hokies have enjoyed a lot of success in the first four meets, with each squad taking first place in the team standings in three consecutive events.
The men's team claimed titles in its first three meets: scoring 11 points at the Wake Forest Relays, 45 at the Virginia Tech Invitational, then 15 at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational.
The 19th-ranked women's team finished as the runner-up at the Wake Forest Relays, but have won each of their last three meets. The Hokies began their streak of three consecutive first-place finishes at the Virginia Tech Invitational with 27 points. Tech also finished first at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational by registering 15 points then a 23-point effort at the William & Mary Inter-Regional also gave them first place.
This weekend's race is part of the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival, held at the University of Arkansas Cross Country Course in Fayetteville, Ark., on a course that boasts a combination of grass, cinder and uneven terrain.
