BLACKSBURG – No. 13/15 Virginia Tech won the regular season finale with an 8-6 win over No. 7/9 Florida State on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.
The Hokies offense exploded for four home runs. Cori McMillan went long twice, and Bre Peck and Zoe Yaeger each hit a home run as well.
How It Happened: Virginia Tech 8, Florida State 6
Florida State got on the board first with a leadoff solo home run and tacked on two more runs to make it 3-0 in the top of the second. After Kylie Aldridge walked, Bre Peck sent one over the wall in left center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Even though the Seminoles scored another run in the top of the third, a solo shot by Cori McMillan – her nation-leading 28th home run of the season – pulled the Hokies within one once again.
After a leadoff double by Peck in the bottom of the fourth, Jordan Lynch ripped a double to center to tie up the game at 4-4.
McMillan wasted no time once again and launched her second home run of the day to lead off the bottom of the fifth. With Emily LeGette on first after a single to right field, Zoe Yaeger blasted a shot straight to left field to extend the Hokie lead to 7-4.
Despite Florida State scoring two more in the top of the sixth, Yaeger delivered once again with an RBI single up the middle to score McMillan and take an 8-6 lead.
After a phenomenal day in the circle from Emma Mazzarone, Emma Lemley came in and earned the save. She struck out two batters in the top of the seventh for her fourth save of the season.
