OKLAHOMA CITY – Virginia Tech’s Cori McMillan was named a USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 10 Finalist.
She is the first Hokie since Keely Rochard (2022) to be named as a Top 10 Finalist and the third overall, joining Rochard and Angela Tincher (2008).
McMillan’s historic season continued at the ACC Tournament as she hit her 30th home run against then-No. 14 Clemson in the ACC Semifinals. She became the first ACC player to hit 30 home runs in a single season and one of just 17 players in Division I history to achieve the milestone as well.
She leads the team in batting average (.452), hits (71), home runs (30), slugging percentage (1.096), on base percentage (.566) and OPS (1.662). Her 0.58 home runs per game leads the nation and her 1.096 slugging percentage ranks second nationally.
The ACC Player of the Year has been crucial in some of the Hokies’ biggest wins this season. She hit the walk-off home run in Tech’s 6-5 win over then-No. 16 Stanford. She also blasted two long balls in Tech’s 8-6 win over then-No. 9 Florida State.
She has four multi-home run games this season. McMillan became just the fourth player in Hokie history to hit three home runs in a single game in Tech’s 21-0 win over Pitt. That game saw 11 home runs by the Hokies – the second most home runs ever hit in an NCAA game.
Despite being at Virginia Tech for only two seasons, the Greensboro, N.C. native is second on Tech’s all-time home run records list with 51, just three behind fellow teammate Bre Peck. She set the single-season home run record last year with 21 and shattered it this year with 30.
McMillan was drafted fourth overall in the inaugural Athletes Unlimited Softball League draft by the Bandits. Virginia Tech had back-to-back picks, with teammate Emma Lemley going third overall to the Blaze.
