Hokies upset No. 46 Georgia Tech on senior day

In a battle of the Techs, Virginia Tech pulls out in front for a 5-2 win

BLACKSBURG – With wins from all four seniors, the Hokies close out their final home game of the season with victory.

Up 3-1 in the match, while up 6-5 in the ultimately deciding set on Courts No. 1 and 5, Victor Kimpel sealed a 6-4, 7-5 triumph on Court No. 5 to clinch the match for the Hokies. 

One of the highlights of the match was the moment seniors No. 65 Matt Harper and Alberto Orso took down the No. 15 doubles pair in the country, by a score of 6-3. Though Tech dropped the doubles point in the tiebreaker of the deciding match, they battled back to victory in singles. 

All four Hokie seniors took home a win in their last match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. 

Scott Sculley got the squad on the board with a straight-set win, 6-0, 6-3. Eyal Shumilov kept it rolling for the Hokies with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Orso continued his doubles success into singles, ousting his opponent 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. 

With a 3-1 lead, it was up to Kimpel and Maxime St. Hilaire to clinch the match. Both leading 6-5 in the final set, Kimpel got the job done for the Hokies. Momentarily, St. Hilaire was triumphant on Court No. 1, winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 to No. 113 Nate Bonetto. 

UP NEXT: The Hokies travel to Charlottesville next Friday, April 11 to face the University of Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash at 4 p.m.
