Six Hokies earn All-ACC Women’s Basketball Academic Team honors Monday

CHARLOTTE – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the 2023-24 All-ACC Women's Basketball Academic Team Monday afternoon which featured six Hokies: Carys Baker, Matilda Ekh, Mackenzie Nelson, Kayl Petersen, Carleigh Wenzel and Lani White.

Carys Baker, Matilda Ekh and Carleigh Wenzel each were recognized for a second consecutive season and Mackenzie Nelson, Kayl Petersen and Lani White were each included for the first time in their careers.

Baker started all 32 contests this season, averaging 12.6 points and 6.3 rebounds. She scored in double figures 23 times including scoring 20 or more three times. She went 5-for-5 on 3’s at Virginia in February, tying Cayla King’s program record for most 3’s made in a row in a single game. Baker was also named to the Fort Myers Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.

Ekh started all 32 contests in her senior season averaging 11.9 points and shooting 39% from beyond the arc where she led the team with 63 made 3's. She scored in double figures 21 times throughout the season and had 23 in the home victory over SMU.

Nelson, a redshirt freshman, averaged 6.0 points per game, 3.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds. Her 1.8 assist to turnover ratio ranked top 10 in the ACC. She made one start in December at Duke and scored in double figures a total of six times. Nelson finished the regular season with back-to-back double figure scoring games at Boston College (11) and Clemson (14). She recorded seven games of five or more assists this season, all VT wins.

Petersen started twice in 32 games as a freshman averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds. She also led the team in blocks. She averaged 8.5 points (7-11 FG) and 4.0 rebounds in two starts and recorded three double figure scoring games this season.

Wenzel started all 32 games and led the team in points (14.0) and assists (3.6). She also set program records for most FT made (82) and attempts (107) in ACC play in a single season. The redshirt sophomore scored in double figures 22 times and totaled 20 or more points five times.

White started 31 of 32 games averaging 9.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. In her junior season she scored in double figures 14 times and scored 20 or more three times. She scored 18 points in WBIT first round going 7-11 and making three 3’s.

The Hokies went 19-13 in Megan Duffy’s first season in Blacksburg, culminating in an appearance in the WBIT where they played into the second round of the competition.
