BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 14/14 Virginia Tech kicked off the series at Cal with an 11-3 run-rule victory on Friday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.

Cori McMillan hit a leadoff home run to set the tone and Michelle Chatfield went yard twice – with one home run being a grand slam – to pave the way for the 11-3 victory.

How It Happened: Virginia Tech 11, Cal 3 (5 inn.)
Cori McMillan wasted no time with her leadoff home run to start the game. On the third pitch, McMillan sent a shot straight to center field to make it 1-0 Hokies. An RBI single by Bre Peck in the top of the first extended the lead to 2-0 in the first.

Despite Cal getting on the board in the bottom of the first, Michelle Chatfield extended the lead with a two-run bomb to left field to make it 4-1 Hokies.

After a scoreless third inning for Tech, Zoe Yaeger ripped a two-RBI single to center field to put the Hokies up 6-1 in the top of the fourth.

After McMillan drew a bases-loaded walk, Chatfield blew the game wide open with a grand slam – her second in three games – to make it 11-1 Hokies after the top of the fifth.

Cal added two in the bottom of the fifth, but Emma Lemley came in for relief and forced a pop-up to secure the run-rule victory.
