TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 15/17 Virginia Tech won both of its games against Southern Utah on Saturday at Rhoads Stadium. The Hokies won the first game 4-0 and the second game 6-3.
Emma Mazzarone pitched a gem for the Hokies in the first game as she tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts and only allowed two hits in seven innings.
How It Happened: Virginia Tech 4, Southern Utah 0
With Jayden Jones and Jordan Lynch both on base to start the top of the first, Michelle Chatfield ripped a double to left field for two RBIs. Cori McMillan followed that up with a single up the middle to bring in Chatfield and take an early 3-0 lead.
Chatfield continued her stellar game one with a solo shot to center field in the top of the fifth inning for her second home run of the season.
Emma Mazzarone was sensational in the circle – allowing just one hit while striking out 10 batters.
How It Happened: Virginia Tech 6, Southern Utah 3
The Hokies found themselves down 3-0 to start the game, but Bre Peck’s fifth home run of the season tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Her three-run blast to center field made it a 3-3 contest.
After a Jordan Lynch single, Michelle Chatfield ripped a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third in the bottom of the fifth. A double to right center by Cori McMillan brought in both runs as the Hokies took a 5-3 lead. Bre Peck capped off the three-run fifth inning with a single up the middle that brought in McMillan.
Emma Lemley entered the game in the top of the fifth and recorded five strikeouts over the eight batters she faced to secure the 6-3 victory.
