BLACKSBURG – Rose Micheaux posted a dominant double-double, finishing with a season-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Virginia Tech to an 86-51 victory over Coppin State Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. For Tech it was their second consecutive victory moving the Hokies' record to 3-1, while Coppin State fell to 2-3.
The Hokies won the opening tip and Micheaux quickly made her presence felt scoring the first basket with a layup. Early on, both teams traded baskets in a competitive first quarter that featured seven lead changes in the first six minutes. However, Virginia Tech pulled ahead in the final minutes, closing the quarter with a 10-point lead, powered by eight points from Carleigh Wenzel, who led all scorers in the period.
Virginia Tech continued to build on their momentum in the second quarter, with Micheaux scoring nine of her 11 first half points in the frame. She also grabbed eight rebounds, helping the Hokies take control. The team went on a 13-0 run, their largest of the night, and took a commanding 42-24 lead into the break.
Heading into the third quarter, Virginia Tech rained 3-pointers, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers to start the half. They continued to pile on the points, stretching their lead to 26 by the end of the third, 67-41.
In the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech's dominance was on full display as they maintained their offensive pressure. All 11 Hokies who played scored a field goal, including freshman Ramiya White, who tallied six points in just five minutes of action. The Hokies' largest lead of the night came in the final minutes, reaching 35 points.
Wenzel and Carys Baker were also big contributors to the win as Wenzel recorded 12 points and Baker added 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Virginia Tech will face Rutgers at home in their next contest on Tuesday November 19th at 6 p.m.
