Virginia Tech continues to excel in latest NCAA APR report

Twelve programs notch perfect APR scores

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech Athletics continued to display impressive results in the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report, which was released Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA.

Four teams, men's cross country, women's golf, women's lacrosse and women's tennis, delivered a perfect multiyear rate of 1,000. Nineteen Hokie programs posted at least a 970. A total of 12 teams had a perfect APR for the 2023-24 academic year.

"Each year, the APR provides a snapshot of how our collaborative efforts are supporting student-athlete success," said Sarah Armstrong, Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services. Our SAASS team works hand-in-hand with student-athletes, coaches and campus partners to ensure student-athletes are not only staying eligible but progressing toward their degrees. It's a point of pride to see their hard work reflected in these outcomes."

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete during the school year. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and programs also can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on annual scores from the 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years.

Despite the transfer portal era, which directly impacts retention numbers and overall APR scores, the Hokies maintain impressive academic metrics. All 20 Tech sports programs included in the report exceeded an APR multiyear score of 950. A Hokie- record four teams posted a perfect multiyear score of 1,000 and eight of 20 had a score of at least 990. Women's golf achieved a perfect score for the eighth straight year.

Women's soccer recorded its 14th straight year of at least a 990, while women's tennis and men's tennis delivered their 14th and eighth straight years, respectively. Men's basketball tallied a 970, while football posted a 976. The football program has been above the 950 threshold since 2009-10.
