BLACKSBURG – Standing at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, Virginia Tech forward Ben Burnham has wasted no time making an impact in Blacksburg. An experienced transfer from the College of Charleston, Burnham brings a dynamic skillset to the Hokies with the ability to defend multiple positions and stretch the floor with his shooting. The Fort Mill, S.C., native boasts a career 38% clip from beyond the arc, providing valuable spacing on offense while showcasing defensive versatility. As he continues to gain confidence in his role with the Hokies, Burnham has proven to be a clutch contributor.
Before arriving at Virginia Tech last May, Burnham played a significant role in Charleston’s success for the first three years of his collegiate career. As a freshman, he registered 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game on 47.3% shooting from the field and 32.4% from deep in nearly 20 minutes per contest. A step forward in his sophomore season saw averages of 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while improving efficiency to 53% from the field and 44.6% from three. In that season, Hokie fans got an early look at Burnham’s ability when he dropped nine points in just 13 minutes against Virginia Tech in 2022.
In his senior season with the Cougars, Burnham posted strong numbers averaging 11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 46.4% from the field and 36.8% from three in just over 22 minutes per contest. He delivered standout performances, including a 19-point, three-rebound, two-block effort against Alabama in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Solidifying his role as a dependable scoring option, Burnham recorded four games with 20 or more points.
Since arriving in Blacksburg, Burnham quickly found his footing. The forward’s presence on the boards stood out early, grabbing a season-high nine rebounds against N.C. A&T. However, it’s outside shooting that has truly elevated his impact. Burnham is currently knocking down a career-best 46.2% from three. The sharpshooting was on full display against Stanford, where the transfer drained four triples on just five attempts, capping off a season-high 18-point performance against the Cardinal.
The senior’s defensive versatility has also stood out, with 26 offensive rebounds, five blocks and 13 steals already this season. The ability to guard multiple positions gives Virginia Tech flexibility in defensive schemes, making Burnham an invaluable asset on both ends of the floor.
One of his biggest moments came in December against Navy, when he led the Hokies with 17 points, including five in the final four minutes to help seal an 80-72 win inside Cassell Coliseum. In a comeback victory over NC State, Virginia Tech erased a 15-point second-half deficit with a 17-4 run, capped by a pair of Jaden Schutt free throws to take a one-point lead with 2.3 seconds left. The Wolfpack had one final chance, but Burnham jumped the inbounds pass for his second steal of the game and threw down a dunk at the buzzer to secure the 79-76 win. That play was named ACC Network’s CPI Security: Securing the Win moment of the game.
