BLACKSBURG – Behind rookie southpaw Jake Marciano’s five shutout innings on Sunday afternoon, the Virginia Tech baseball team put away UNCG, 6-2, evening the teams’ three-game series at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

Making his first collegiate start after his scoreless season debut on Opening Day, Marciano flexed complete command Sunday on the mound, recording seven strikeouts while no-hitting the Spartans through four innings of play. The 6-foot-3 freshman from Bayville, New Jersey – who is yet to allow a run through eight innings pitched this season – collected 12 outs from the first 13 batters he faced before working himself out of a two-on, none-out jam during the fifth inning.

Virginia Tech (4-2) plated three runs during the bottom of the second inning and three more runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, ultimately taking its 6-0 lead against UNCG (4-2) into the eighth inning. Senior third baseman David Lewis finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle during his 3-for-4 day, delivering an RBI triple during the second inning and an RBI infield single during the sixth inning.
