BLACKSBURG – Guard Matilda Ekh has emerged as a consistent playmaker for the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team in her senior season. The 6-foot-2 Swedish standout, now in her second season with the Hokies, has brought an international pedigree and clutch performances to the program, solidifying her role as a key contributor.
Ekh’s journey to Blacksburg began with an impressive career overseas. She earned Rookie of the Year honors in the Swedish First League during the 2019-20 season and represented Sweden in the 2021 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket. Before that, she captained Sweden’s U18 National Team to a fourth-place finish in the European Championship B Division, while leading her high school squad to the U19 Swedish Championship and earning MVP honors.
Since joining the Hokies, Ekh has built on that foundation. Her junior season saw her start all 33 games, averaging 10.4 points per game and shooting 40% from beyond the arc. She scored in double figures 21 times, including a season-high 25 points at Rutgers and 21 in the NCAA tournament win over Marshall. In that same game, she eclipsed the 1,000-career-point milestone with a first-quarter three-pointer, sparking a dominant Hokies win.
Now a senior, the sharpshooter has embraced her role as a leader for the Hokies, both on and off the court. At the ACC Tipoff event to kick off the 2024-2025 season, she reflected on the ACC’s theme of “accomplishing greatness,” offering insight into what it means to her.
“I would just say being the best version of yourself every day and giving to others consistently. Being a great teammate, great friend, or whatever it can be,” Ekh shared.
That mindset is evident in Ekh’s play this season, where she has consistently delivered in critical moments. Averaging 11.3 points per game, she posted a season-high 18 points against UNCW and added four three-pointers in a strong showing against Georgia. Most recently, her composure under pressure played a pivotal role in the Hokies' 68-64 win over Miami, where she sank a crucial three-pointer during an 11-1 fourth quarter run that secured Tech's first ACC victory of the season. Fans can expect more clutch performances from this Swedish playmaker as she continues to leave her mark on Virginia Tech basketball.
Next up, the Hokies will take on No. 13 Georgia Tech in Atlanta, a pivotal ACC road matchup. Fans won’t have to wait long to see Ekh and the team back in action at Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum, as Virginia Tech is set to host Wake Forest on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. ET. Be sure to secure your spot and enjoy an exciting afternoon of Hokies basketball!
