Emily Horvath Galbreath (‘20) is a broadcast director at Queen City news in Charlotte, North Carolina. At Virginia Tech, she majored in Multimedia Journalism with minors in Cinema and Business Leadership. Emily chose this major because she knew she wanted to work in television. It was not until she started taking journalism classes at Virginia Tech that she realized how much she loved working in a control room. Emily enjoys reading, is passionate about sports and the never ending debate on whether or not Central Jersey exists.

Q: Why do you think it is important to give back to Virginia Tech Athletics?

EHG: I think it’s important to give back because it helps the programs grow. We all love to show up in our maroon and orange on game days every Saturday, but none of that can happen without the help of donations.

Q: Why did you decide to attend Virginia Tech?

EHG: When I was applying to schools, way back in 2015, I was interested in going to a more southern school with a good football program. A lot of people won’t consider Blacksburg, Virginia, the south, but as a girl from New Jersey - this was the south for me! Frank Beamer was leading an incredible program here and the second I came to town, I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of.

Q: How has Virginia Tech Athletics impacted you?

EHG: Athletics at VT was the foundation of my college career. My best friends in college and I were all very different people. We were in very different majors, different Greek life organizations and different apartment complexes. But the thing we all had in common? Our love for football. We never missed a football game. Rain or shine, we were there. My love for athletics even transcends my time as a student. I come back to VT twice a year for football games and for the spring game. The big kicker - my wedding reception was at the University Club in Lane Stadium. My husband and I are both Hokie Alumni. We love this school and this team so much that we couldn’t imagine our big day without Tech being part of it.

Q: What is your favorite Virginia Tech sports memory?

EHG: The 6OT game my senior year. Hands down, no question. We spent the morning of the game at my apartment in RSA and none of my friends wanted to go. They thought UNC was “amazing” and “we would lose.” That year we enacted a “yes year” policy for our senior year - that if I called “yes year” on something, they had to do it. So we went to the game and it was the most incredible experience of our lives.

Q: Why would you encourage other Virginia Tech Recent Graduates to give?

EHG: We all love Virginia Tech athletics. Donations are how we keep the programs and the facilities up and running in good condition. It’s how scholarships get paid and how we recruit good players. While not everyone likes to donate, it is necessary. Plus, we normally get really good swag with it!
