Things to Know
Battle for a Bowl Game
Currently sitting at 5-5 on the season, Brent Pry and company strive to reach the six-win mark and claim bowl game eligibility in back-to-back seasons. With a victory on the road, it will be the first time Tech plays in the postseason in consecutive seasons since 2018-19. It would also establish forward progress in the program, as the Hokies would play for a second bowl title in Pry’s third season at the helm.
Road Warriors
Performing well on the road is a tall task for plenty of teams across the country. Many programs boast some sort of home-field advantage that creates a rowdy atmosphere for opposing teams. Tech is set to face a Blue Devils program that is 4-1 at home and whose lone defeat came in overtime to then-No. 22 SMU. The Hokies are prepared for a tough test on the road, and a victory would give the program an away game record that’s .500 or above in nearly six seasons.
Players to Watch
Running back Bhayshul Tuten
A talented skill player in Tech’s backfield, Tuten started the season with seven straight contests of reaching the endzone. Averaging 6.5 yards per carry through nine games, the senior tailback is 49 rushing yards away from eclipsing 1,000 yards on the season. Tuten’s second year in the maroon and orange has been impressive, with significant milestones and five contests with at least 115 rushing yards. The Paulsboro, New Jersey native also set the program single-game rushing record with 266 yards and four total touchdowns against Boston College.
Defensive End Antwaun Powell-Ryland
The mayor of ‘Sacksburg’ is also having a dominant year in his second season with the program. Powell-Ryland currently ranks second in the nation with 13 sacks. APR has significant accolades of his own, recording four sacks in a game on two separate occasions and becoming the all-time program leader of such performances. If the Portsmouth, Virginia product can amass two more sacks on the year, he will surpass Corey Moore (14.5) for the fourth-most sacks in a season in program history.
