Virginia Tech Men's Tennis

OUR PROGRAM

Tech has qualified for 13 NCAA Championships and has sent 18 individual athletes to the Singles Championships and six pairings to the Doubles Championships. 

At Virginia Tech, we compete in the most competitive tennis conference - the ACC.

14 of the 16 programs in the league finished ranked in the ITA College Rankings in 2025. Nine teams went to the NCAA Championships, with five being seeded in the top 16. 

ALL-AMERICAN STATUS

Three Hokies have achieved All-American honors during their time with the program. 

The first came in 1996, and the most recent in 2016. These players set the standard for Virginia Tech men's tennis, proving themselves to be some of the top players in the country. 

OLIVER MAYO
OLIVER MAYO

Mayo is a 1996 NCAA All-American, after making it to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships. He ranked as high as No. 34 by the ITA College Tennis Rankings. Mayo was the 1996 A-10 Player of the Year, and a 2x All-Atlantic 10 honoree during his time at Tech.

AARON MARCHETTI
AARON MARCHETTI

Marchetti is a 1999 NCAA All-American, after making it to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships. He ranked as high as No. 15 by the ITA College Tennis Rankings. Marchetti was a 3x A-10 Player of the Year honoree, as well as a 4x All-Atlantic 10 honoree during his time at Tech.

JOAO MONTEIRO
JOAO MONTEIRO

Monteiro is in the books as one of the highest achieving athletes in Virginia Tech tennis history. In 2016, he was named an All-American with his run to the NCAA Final Four. He ranked as high as No. 9 by the ITA College Tennis Rankings. During Monteiro's time at Tech, he was a 3x All-ACC honoree.

Head Coach Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson just completed his 27th season leading the Hokies. During his time at Tech, he has led the Hokies to 15 NCAA Championship Appearances, including ten consecutive appearances from 2007-2016. 

In his first two seasons at Tech, Thompson led the Hokies to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Championships. In 2015, the team was a top-16 national seed and hosted the first two rounds of the tournament. 

Thompson has produced two All-Americans during his oversight of the program, Aaron Marchetti and Joao Montiero.

ASSISTANT COACH AARON MARCHETTI

Marchetti joined the Hokies coaching staff in 2023. He is one of three All-American in Tech's men's tennis history, being inducted into the 2009 Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements as a player. Prior to coaching the Hokies, Marchetti served as the Director of Player Development and Coaching at Edmond Center Court.

ASSISTANT COACH CHIP WEBB

Webb joined the Hokies coaching staff in 2023. He played at Florida State as a four-year letter winner. In his final season with the Seminoles, he was awarded All-ACC honors as the team finished that season as ACC runner-ups.

BURROWS-BURLESON TENNIS CENTER

The Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center is home to both the women's and men's tennis programs at Virginia Tech. 

The facility includes six outdoor courts with bleacher seating as well as six indoor courts with chairback seating and a mezzanine viewing area. The courts were resurfaced in the fall of 2024. 

All courts, indoor and outdoor, are equipped with PlaySight streaming technology.
