OUR PROGRAM

Tech has qualified for 10 NCAA Tournaments, having made runs to the College Cup in 2007 and the Elite Eight in 2016.

At Virginia Tech, we compete in the country's toughest soccer league - the ACC.

Since the turn of the century, almost 50% of the the NCAA titles have been won by teams from the ACC. In 2023, nine ACC teams earned bids to the postseason tournament, the most of any conference.

With the first pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, Austin FC selects Dani Pereira

Dani was selected first overall by Austin FC in January 2021. Now in his fourth season with the club, he has appeared in 100+ matches and made 85+ starts.

James Kasak started 40 matches for the Hokies, scoring six goals and recording 13 assists before being drafted by Sporting KC.

Ben Lundgaard was a first team All-ACC selection at Tech before being drafted No. 21 overall by Columbus Crew FC.

Juan Pablo Saavedra started all 22 matches in the Hokies' historic 2016 season and was drafted by Toronto FC.

  • Led Virginia Tech to the six NCAA Tournaments between 2016 and 2021, an accomplishment only five schools accomplished.
  • One of three programs to win a game in each NCAA Tournament from 2016 to 2021.
  • Four 'Sweet Sixteen' appearances.
  • 'Elite Eight' appearance in 2016.
  • Hokies have advanced in the NCAA Tournament in each season that Brizendine has taken the squad to the postseason.
  • Been on staff for four wins over No. 1 programs: Marshall (2021), Notre Dame (2017), North Carolina (2011) and Duke (2004).

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH PAT MCSORLEY

• Joined the staff in 2008 and is entering his 17th season. • Has been instrumental in player development and program success, contributing to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2016–21, highlighted by an Elite Eight run in 2016. • Played professionally for four years before starting his coaching career at VMI. • Four-year letterwinner at James Madison University, where he is the all-time leader in goals and points.

• Returns to Blacksburg after serving a five-year stint as the head coach at UAB. • Played a pivotal role in rebuilding the Tech program after significant recruiting restrictions, overseeing all facets of the program including recruiting, budget management, training sessions, and scheduling. • Helped guide the Hokies to one of the most successful seasons in program history, advancing to the Elite Eight of the 2016 NCAA Tournament and finishing with a No. 8 final national ranking.

• Entering his third season as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech following five seasons as an assistant at Duke. • Over the past two seasons, the Hokies have posted the two lowest goals-against totals since 2004, conceding just 19 goals in 2024 and 18 in 2025. • Coached three All-ACC goalkeepers at Duke, including All-American and 2022 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year Elliot Hamill. • Played for Virginia Tech from 2010-13, while being named first team All-ACC in his senior season. • Played professionally with USL sides Charlotte Eagles and Charlotte Independence.

THOMPSON FIELD

The home of the Hokies features seating for more than 2,000 fans, and the open areas around the venue allow for another 1,500 to watch. The facility also features an operations center for the broadcasting of games on the ACC Network, a bluegrass playing surface, and recently enhanced lighting and audio systems.
