QUICK FACTS

  • Construction on the main portion of Cassell Coliseum began in 1961, and the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team opened the unfinished arena on Jan. 3, 1962, with a 91-67 win over Alabama. The team played there for two years before the building was completed in December 1964, at a cost of $2.7 million.
  • For years, the arena was called the Virginia Tech Coliseum. But on September 17, 1977, Virginia Tech officials and friends dedicated the coliseum in honor of the late Stuart K. Cassell, who spearheaded the project.
  • In 2010-11, the Virginia Tech athletics department celebrated Cassell’s 50th anniversary by bringing back many of the former great players and coaches in various sports who have played in the arena. Also, the first men’s basketball team ever to play in Cassell was recognized.
  • Through new projects, renovations, and maintenance reserve projects, Cassell Coliseum has undergone approximately $10 million in improvements over the past decade.
  • Cassell Coliseum today ranks as one of the most difficult places for opposing teams to play and is considered one of the best home environments in all of college sports.

Virginia Tech set its single-game attendance record on December 3, 1966, welcoming 11,500 fans into Cassell Coliseum while hosting Purdue.

QUICK FACTS

  • Construction for building Hahn Hurst practice facility began in April of 2008, and on August 10, 2009, Virginia Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball programs moved into their new $21 million practice facility next to Cassell Coliseum.
  • The 49,000-square-foot building is devoted solely to Virginia Tech Men's and Women's basketball and grants student-athletes 24-hour access.
  • The center features top-tier amenities, including a front entrance with large player graphics and memorabilia displays. Upstairs are coaches' offices—women’s on the left, men’s on the right—with a shared small kitchen between them.
  • Each wing includes five assistant coach offices, a conference room, and a large head coach office with private bathrooms, closets, and views of the courts and outdoors. Both head coaches also have balconies overlooking the basketball courts.
  • On the ground floor are spacious locker rooms designed by each team. Nearby are film rooms for each program, massive lounges with computer stations and flat-screens, and coaches' locker rooms.
  • Also on the ground floor are a large equipment room with an office, a training room with two exam rooms, therapy tubs, and six treatment tables, plus a large strength and conditioning area with two staff offices.
  • The weight and training rooms open directly onto the practice courts, which can be divided by a soft wall for simultaneous use. The courts feature large player graphics and match the Cassell Coliseum floor to replicate game conditions.
  • A large rear patio overlooks the Steve Johnson football practice field and Lane Stadium. Staff plan to use it for tailgating and hosting recruits to showcase Virginia Tech's strong family atmosphere.
